Maboneng is on the lips of everyone these days – across the globe and it is no surprise why!
Maboneng Precinct has art, theatre, music, food, shopping, coffee and more! If you’re heading to Johannesburg and you aren’t staying in Maboneng then you definitely need to stop by and see what all the fuss is about.
We got a chance to spend two weeks in Johannesburgs’ hippest neighbourhood, Maboneng and we loved every moment of it. There was no shortage of good eats. The accommodations we stayed in were industrial, fresh and lofty; obviously super on trend!
Here are a few of our favourites from accommodations to food!
Situated right on Fox Street this airbnb was easily one of the most convenient locations in Johannesburg not to mention it had a pretty amazing view of the CBD skyline.
This was the first place we stayed as soon as we arrived to Johannesburg and it was an amazing choice. The apartment had everything we needed and a pretty funky loft bed. It was an old factory turned into industrial style lofts with an awesome rooftop that hosted parties on the weekend. Right downstairs was a small art gallery and the POPArt Theatre. We got a chance to sit down with one of the founders of the theatre for our Maboneng feature video which is set to come out soon!
This apartment was nothing short of amazing. It had every culinary utensil, an amazing view and it was HUGE!
This by far was my personal favourite self-catering place we’ve stayed at so far in Africa. When I say this apartment was big it is a complete understatement. We were on the top floor and the ceilings were so tall. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed and more. There were so many windows that daylight just poured through and the balcony, YES the balcony had another incredible view of the sunset over the CBD skyline. Not to mention that it was completely affordable we got a chance to make all types of fun food with all the culinary tools and got a few chances to sit on the balcony with a cup of coffee or lunch.
Celina stumbled across this one and came back raving about how good the coffee was
And honestly, I’ve had a lot of coffee in a lot of different countries and from a lot of different brands but there is actually something about Origin coffee that I was absolutely hooked on!! I wish I had gotten to try it sooner because I would have easily been there daily getting my caffeine fix. The location is also fantastic, a refurbished auto garage with large windows and beautiful light wood throughout gives this really warm glow and vibe to the shop. It was cold in Johannesburg this June but it was toasty inside Origin! They roast specially handpicked coffee from around the world and there is a great deal of attention to detail. It is really a great shop and you’ll feel productive as soon as you walk in.. weird right?
Just as the name of the spot says, we did! I was absolutely stuffed after.
They have a banging menu that is vegan friendly! The dishes are mainly Israeli breakfast favourites and they do them so right. Originally I’d gone in for some green juices but as soon as I walked in I could smell the amazing coffee and food and had to look at the menu. I went back upstairs green drinks in hand (which might I add were incredible) and told Celina we needed to go down for lunch. We ordered some bomb coffee, Latka; a roasted potato and onion patty type thing, Falafels, a loads of hummus! If you’re stopping by the neighbourhood make sure you get some tasty grub from Eat Your Heart Out before you go!
There was a bunch of places that we stopped by and ate like Little Addis, some stands at the Sunday Market and more. You really need to go to Maboneng to experience all the greatness yourself, by the time you get there I am sure that four more stores will have popped up that we didn’t get a chance to experience! Until next time 🙂
